Cache Valley Transit District Rider Survey and Analysis

Public transit is becoming more important as the constraints on our roadway networks become apparent even in small to medium sized metropolitan areas. Transit systems are one way to alleviate traffic congestion and decrease the environmental impacts of personal transportation. Cache Valley Transit District (CVTD) is a fare free bus system located in Northern Utah. The funding for CVTD comes from a local, one percent sales tax and through Federal Transit Administration Urbanized Area Formula Program grants. Utah State University conducted an on-board passenger survey on all CVTD routes in November 2008. The information gathered in this research would assist CVTD staff in developing strategies and conducting planning activities aimed at making service improvements to ensure the growth and long-term stability of the transit system in the community. On time performance of the busses and the ability for the riders to get where they need to go ranked as the two most important characteristics of the CVTD service. The results of this research will also help other fare free transit providers prioritize the areas of emphasis for improvements to their service.
