Pavement Performance and Annualized Cost Study

The purpose of this research initiative is to examine the constructability and durability of various pavement treatments in terms of a comparative life cycle cost analysis. The evaluation is focused upon those projects which have rehabilitated existing pavements with reclaimed base stabilization, cold recycled bituminous concrete, and milling followed by various overlay(s) including Marshall and Superpave mixes. Projects have been selected from distinct microclimates representing the range of Vermont weather conditions. Cracking and rutting data have been collected on roughly 100 projects ranging in age from one to twelve years. Data is to be collected, reduced, analyzed, and evaluated for eventual inclusion in an interim report. Those projects which no longer contribute quality data will be removed from the data collection sites. Staff are performing a preliminary data quality review for ongoing analysis. Future goals are to finalize and distribute an interim report, with one of the deliverables being the identification of performance trends for each type of rehabilitation. A second objective will be to recommend actions for further analysis or to conclude data collection under this activity.

  • Pending activities include; evaluation of the cracking, rutting and roughness data for the three major treatments (standard overlay, reclaimed base, and cold recycled bituminous pavement). Statistical analysis of this data will also be performed to check on trends. New projects will be added as needed to expand the database.
