Mechanistic Analysis of Geocell-Reinforced Pavement Foundations

Geocells are factory-made three-dimensional forms of geosynthetic (polymer) materials with interconnected cells filled with soil. Geocells have been successfully used worldwide to reinforce pavement foundations. The experimental study will include the testing of geocells with different infill materials (aggregate and sand) above different sub grade foundations. The numerical analysis will include parametric studies considering a number of influence factors. The proposed research will benefit the geosynthetic industry and the transportation community by promoting the use of geocells and building safer pavement systems.

Full-Scale Evaluation of Performance of Geocell-Reinforced Bases

Geocells are factory-made three-dimensional forms of geosynthetic (polymer) materials, which can reduce soil lateral movement and form a stiffened mattress layer to widely distribute loads. Laboratory and numerical studies from the previous research have demonstrated that geocells can significantly increase bearing capacity and reduce settlement. However, no good methods have been developed so far to design geocell-reinforced bases due to the lack of full-scale performance data. This proposed research will utilize a full-scale testing facility to conduct trafficking tests on geocell-reinforced bases to obtain performance data and develop a design method for geocell-reinforced bases. The proposed research will benefit the geosynthetic industry and the transportation community by providing design methods for the use of geocells in base reinforcement and building safer pavement systems.
