Develop Transition for MASH Test Level 4 (TL-4) Compliant Guardrail System

The Performing Agency shall develop and test guardrail end-transition for the metal guardrail developed under the recently completed Receiving Agency’s project. The guardrail design that was developed and crash tested under a past project had incorporated an end-transition design that transitioned to the standard Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) Test Level 3 (TL-3) W-beam guardrail and standard guardrail end-terminals. However, this transition design was not evaluated through impact simulations or full-scale crash testing. The Performing Agency shall evaluate the previously developed end-transition design through simulation and full-scale crash testing. If the transition design of the existing project is determined to be inadequate after the simulation analyses, the Performing Agency shall recommend changes to the end-transition design and evaluate the modified design through further impact simulation analysis. Once the transition design has been developed, the Performing Agency shall perform full-scale crash testing to evaluate the transition design in accordance with MASH TL-3 evaluation criteria for guardrail transitions. The Performing Agency shall provide a transition design that allows full implementation of the TL-4 guardrail previously developed under the existing project..

Pooled Fund for the Design, Development and Testing of a Box Beam Approach Guardrail Transition and an MGS Approach Guardrail Transition to a MASH TL-4 Three Steel Tube Bridge Rail

The research objective is to develop two non-proprietary approach guardrail transition systems from box beam and MGS guardrail that are AASHTO Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) Test Level 3 (TL-3) compliant. The transitions will be designed to connect the guardrail systems to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Type C2P TL-4 bridge rail system. Direct connection between the transition section and bridge rail is desired to avoid use of a solid concrete parapet end that could hinder snow clearing operations.

Investigation, Dynamic Testing, and Evaluation of Guardrail Posts for Use in Transitions between Temporary Concrete Barrier and Guardrail

Temporary concrete barriers (TCBs) are connected and transitioned to many types of barriers. Unfortunately, the only transitions previously developed have been between TCBs and safety shaped concrete barriers and TCBs and permanent concrete median barriers. Transitions between TCBs and other common barrier types, such as guardrail, have typically not been full-scale crash tested and may pose a serious hazard to motorists during an impact. The Midwest Roadside Safety Facility (MwRSF) has an existing project that consists of developing a transition between TCBs and the Midwest Guardrail System (MGS). That project has funding to identify and quantify the most pressing TCB to guardrail transition needs and for concept development with LS-DYNA computer simulation. However, further research is needed to evaluate the performance of typical post types and sizes that could potentially be utilized during the concept development. Therefore, this project seeks to supplement the concept development and simulation of transitions between TCBs and the MGS through dynamic post testing.
