      <title>Assessing Potential of Bike Share Networks and Active Transportation to Improve Urban Mobility, Physical Activity and Public Health Outcomes in South Carolina</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Description: There is need for evidence-based research about how, when, where, and why people undertake active travel, like bicycling and walking, and about how the built environment and infrastructure may or may not accommodate active travel. As stated in the National Physical Activity Plan, transportation and public health entities should collaborate to “improve and expand existing data collection sources to assess active transportation patterns and trends that include local-area data.” Charleston, South Carolina has the conditions necessary to promote active travel, such as supportive stakeholders and a walkable built environment, as well as the tools to study the conditions under which active travel may thrive. This research will conduct a case study on active travel in Charleston, focusing on issues such as route conditions and the use of bike share programs to better understand how Charleston’s built environment is meeting the health, physical activity, and transportation needs of the community. 

Intellectual Merit: Qualitative, quantitative, and geospatial methods will be used to evaluate active transportation, physical activity, and health outcomes in Charleston, South Carolina.
Broader Impacts: Research results will be beneficial to communities which are undertaking active transportation and bike share initiatives to improve mobility, reduce congestion, promote sustainability, increase levels of physical activity, and bring about desirable public health outcomes.
Technology Transfer: The research team will engage local officials, decision makers, and community stakeholders by communicating its data analysis and results, for example through infographics, formal meetings, and a guidebook. Findings will also be published and presented in national engineering and city planning forums, and will be disseminated to municipalities and other stakeholders via strategic technology transfer channels.]]></description>

      <title>The Davis Bicycle Studies</title>

      <description><![CDATA[As a means of transportation and as a form of physical activity, bicycling generates benefits to the bicyclist as well as to the community as a whole. Bicycling now accounts for less than 1 percent of all trips for all purposes in the U.S., but evidence from other western countries suggests that under the right conditions, bicycling levels can be significantly higher. The experience of Davis, California suggests that it is possible to create conditions conducive to higher levels of bicycling in the U.S. However, the extent to which bicycling policy has contributed to bicycling levels in Davis has not been rigorously assessed. This project aims to fill that gap through a quasi-experimental study of bicycling behavior in Davis and comparison communities designed to determine the influence of bicycle infrastructure and mixed-use land use patterns relative to individual preferences, community culture, and other factors. This project focuses on the analysis of data collected using an on-line survey in Davis and four comparison cities in spring 2006. This analysis will explore the relative importance of a variety of factors in explaining bicycling behavior. This project is planned as the first in a series of complementary studies of bicycling behavior focused on Davis.]]></description>

This project focuses on the analysis of data collected using an on-line survey in Davis and five comparison cities in early fall 2006, supplemented by a follow-up phone survey of Davis residents completed in spring 2008 and complemented by interviews to be conducted with Davis residents as a part of the proposed project. This project continues Phases 2 and 3 of the Davis Bicycle Studies.]]></description>

This project aims to fill that gap through cross-sectional and quasi-longitudinal studies of bicycling behavior in Davis and comparison communities designed to determine the influence of bicycle infrastructure and mixed-use land use patterns relative to individual preferences, community culture, and other factors. This project focuses on the analysis of data collected using an on-line survey in Davis and five comparison cities in early fall 2006 and the development of a survey of students at Davis High and selected comparison schools. This project completes Phase 1 and begins Phase 2 of the Davis Bicycle Studies.]]></description>
