Concrete Filled Steel Tube Arch Suppl. #1
Record Type: DOT

The Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR,) Bridge Division, is faced with the challenge of providing a 175 ft single span bridge with a structural depth not exceeding 35 in. for the Ravenna Viaduct. The only way to meet this challenge is by using a truss or a tied arch system. A tied arch would require less fabrication labor and would be more aesthetically pleasing than a truss. An innovative steel tube parallel arch system was investigated by NDOR and University personnel and was found to be feasible. The slender arch would only be possible due to the high performance steel and concrete to be used, and due to use of new theories recognizing a significant increase in capacity of concrete that is confined inside a steel tube. The proposed work includes establishing design criteria for the arch top chord, the arch bottom chord and the arch hangers. It would include development and testing of connection of the deck to the bottom chord, top and bottom chord splice connections, details at the abutments, construction and final bridge buckling stability, and material and construction specifications for quality control/quality assurance. Survey also will be undertaken to identify the best concrete mix and pumping techniques for tube filling, and the measures required for durability of the arch and the deck. The immediate goal of this research is to provide technical justification for the design and detailing of the Ravenna Viaduct arch system. The results of the research will form the basis for standardizing the system for future use in applications where superstructure depth is severely limited. Missouri River bridges built recently have superstructure depths ranging from 14 to 28 feet. The paper describes how an economical high-performance steel/concrete tube arch system can be developed for Missouri River crossings with structural depth of 6 to 10 feet.
