Evaluation of Automated Bridge Anti-Icing System
Record Type: DOT

Recent developments in highway maintenance have produced systems that detect the impending formation of ice on a roadway or bridge and dispense anti-icing chemicals to head off hazardous conditions. These systems can also notify maintenance personnel and warn motorists. This research will evaluate the effectiveness of automatic anti-icing systems. Expected benefits include quicker response to slippery conditions in isolated areas, reduced maintenance cost as a result of fewer maintenance crew dispatches, and reduced motor vehicle accidents. The initial phase of this research will recommend for approval by the Commissioner an automatic anti-icing system on a bridge that is scheduled for deck replacement or rehabilitation. The cost of operation, reduction in personnel and equipment costs, and performance of the system will be evaluated. An appropriate bridge would be one that tends to ice over before the adjacent roadway and often requires individual attention from maintenance crews.
