Gloucester Intelligent Transportation Systems Network

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) in cooperation with the City of Gloucester and the Cape Ann Transit Authority will contract for professional services to undertake a feasibility analysis of the existing Gloucester Commuter Rail Station. Work will be undertaken (1) to undermine site conditions/environmental analysis, and (2) to complete an adequate level of designs for a construction estimate. The project scope will include acquisition of a privately owned parcel of land across from the existing station platform and construction of a new low level boarding platform and a new ADA-compliant accessible boarding platform, construction of an at grade parking lot, ADA compliant pedestrian access from new parking lot to boarding platforms, installation of track and signal modifications, and applications of ITS technology which includes the installation of a new train approach warning system that will be integrated with passenger communications system to create a centralized patron information center located at the center of the platform. This new system will use a modified platform sign structure and will include the following items: system route maps ( spider diagram); LED information signs; strobe train approach; warning lights; speakers for verbal messaging; police call back boxes; pay telephone and ITY. This is a congressionally mandated project.
