Advanced Technology Transit Bus
Record Type: RiP

The Advanced Technology Transit Bus (ATTB) is the nation's newest advancement in heavy duty public transportation vehicles. The program was initiated in 1992 with the objective of developing a lightweight, low floor, low emissions, user friendly bus, using proven and advanced technologies developed in the aerospace industries. This project enables the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority to continue development of the ATTB - a major technology effort nearing completion representing state of the art advancements in heavy duty bus subsystems. This new bus is more that 10,000 pounds lighter than a typical 30,000 pound bus. Savings from the weight reduction include lower fuel costs and less road damage. The low weight bus also incorporates a highly efficient fuel saving drive system, aerospace construction, accessible design, and hybrid electric propulsion into a single vehicle design. The 40-foot transit bus will meet or exceed the American With Disabilities Act requirements through the use of a low, flat floor and a simple ramp system. The ATTB will have a longer life-span and lower life cycle cost than existing buses, as well as improved performance, fuel efficiency gains, and less brake and tire wear. Testing of six prototype buses in regular service is currently underway. See this "space" bus on the FTA Website at [< http://www.fta.dot.gov/office/research.].
