Field Evaluation of Roller Integrated Compaction Monitoring
Record Type: DOT
The objectives of the research are to: (1) demonstrate the value of real time quality control of compaction operations to accelerate construction, reduce re-work, and improve uniformity; (2) improve value of field data and reduce frequency of traditional required sampling through improved construction process control; (3) evaluate the reliability and potential use of roller integrated compaction monitoring (RICM) data for acceptance and measurements of in-situ stiffness of the constructed earth materials; linking to properties that relate more directly to design (e.g. modulus) and in-service performance; (4) establish the value of using RICM and mechanistic-based point measurement technologies for rapid renewal projects by benchmarking against sections built using standard construction techniques; (5) establish long-term monitoring sections and monitoring protocols/assessments for the Louisiana Transportation Research Center (LTRC) to document impact of implementing these technologies and specification approach; (6) demonstrate Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) 2 R-07 performance specifications for rapid renewal using non-destructive RICM technology and mechanistic-based in situ point measurements on a new pavement section including subgrade, stabilized subgrade, base course, and hot mix asphalt (HMA) layers; (7) develop field data collection and evaluation expertise in light of newly proposed statistical framework to define quality control/quality assurance (QC/QA) factors; and (8) study the effect of moisture content on the measured stiffness of the material
