Promoting Workforce Development for the Transportation Profession Through a Multi-University/Agency Partnership
Record Type: UTC
The objective of this partnership among Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU), Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) and Texas A&M University (TAMU) is to produce from underrepresented groups high quality transportation professionals with research and other real world experiences. The partnership strengthens and expands the existing FHA-sponsored Summer Transportation Institute (STI) at PVAMU by introducing a second year experience called STI Scholars. The STI Scholars program provides a combination of education, exposure and an opportunity to be a mentor for first-year STI participants. The curriculum for the STI Scholars program is more challenging and better transitions students into engineering. STI Scholars gain real world experience by shadowing transportation professionals at TTI. The specific tasks for this project are: (i) Strengthen curricula for the existing STI program, (ii) Develop former STI students network, (iii) Develop academic pathway, (iv) Develop and implement the STI Scholars program, and (v) Develop network for sustainability. Project deliverables include (i) revised curriculum for STI program, (ii) database of former students (iii) database of counselors/science and math teachers from several Texas high schools for networking and recruiting (iv) a streamlined academic pathway for the students to follow, (v) STI Scholars curriculum, (vi) implementation of STI Scholars program and (vii) network of corporations and foundations for fundraising for long term sustainability of the program. The success of this project can have a positive impact not only on the Civil Engineering programs at PVAMU and TAMU, but this partnership can be expanded to other universities.
