Investigation of CDOT's Flowfill Specifications
Record Type: DOT

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) uses flowfill as an alternative to compacted soil backfill to backfill bridge abutments, pipes and culverts, utility cuts and minor inlet structures. However, flowfill is expensive and some field performance problems have been encountered. A study panel concluded that a performance-based specification for flowfill is needed. The objective of this study is to review and improve CDOT's specifications and quality assurance procedures for flowfill.
